IUI

What is IUI?

IUI is often the first assisted reproductive procedure chosen by couples with infertility problems to have a child. It takes just a few minutes and does not involve any invasive method. Furthermore, it is one of many proven treatments that we frequently use at Surya Fertility Associates to help our patients become pregnant.
It is usually carried out when the sperms lack enough motility or their count is too low. During the treatment, the doctor places high-quality sperms (separated from non-moving sperms in a specialized lab) directly inside a woman’s uterus using a catheter. The aim is to increase the number of sperms reaching the egg, thereby increasing the chances of fertilization. Before the IUI treatment, the ovulation phase is either stimulated through a short course of hormone therapy for the woman or unaided for the body’s natural cycle to occur.
What are the risks associated with IUI?

Risks with IUI increase when too many follicles mature at once and the estrogen in the blood is too elevated. Regular ultrasounds and blood level checkups are hence performed to carefully monitor the patient’s progress.

  • Multiple pregnancies
  • Hyperstimulation (Enlargement of the ovaries during the second half of the cycle)
  • Infection

  • Severe endometriosis
  • Reduced ovarian reserve (high FSH) or ovarian failure
  • Significant abnormalities in motility, sperm count & morphology
We perform a thorough examination of both the male and female partners prior to recommending any infertility treatment. Our doctors will discuss with you your best option for fulfilling your dream of having a baby.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our success rate of IUI infertility treatment at Surya Fertility Associates depends on several factors such as infertility reasons, female age and more.

  • Less effective than IVF. Though it costs lesser, it is around 3 times less successful than IVF.
No, the more cycles, the higher the chances of conceiving a child. If the IUI process is performed every month, the success rates can increase up to 20% per cycle.
